Shortly after moving to Staunton, VA everything got shut down by Covid. So, after hermiting along with the rest of the world in the Spring and Summer of 2020--and tired of all the divisive national rhetoric--I was moved in the Fall to venture back out into the world with a local gift shop full of "good" words. Words for hearts, minds and souls intended to help comfort, uplift, inspire, transform and connect the spaces between us. Words for weddings, anniversaries or a birthday around the corner. Words for friends, family members or colleagues to express appreciation, encouragement or sympathy. Words as art in prints, cards, posters, bookmarks, magnets, quotecards, guided journals, books and more! Words in favorite books that live in my Book, Mind & Thinker corner until someone takes them home. Or your words that you'd like us to create something wonderful with for a special person or occasion.
In addition to all the books, poetry and word-art are sprinkled some beautiful things to go along with your word-gifts, such as pens and handmade journals, quotecards and word stones, scarves, jewelry, quilling art ornaments with inspirations, crystal suncatchers, handmade papers and D.I.Y. stuff, Oracle and Inspiration card decks, handmade fairies with original fairy poems, mermaids, and new things we're adding all the time! Not everything in the Words Matter physical location is here in the Heaven & Earth Works online shop, so if you see something below that piques your interest, feel free to ask us about it! Also, FYI, we offer Facetime personal shopping! That means we walk around the shop showing you everything, you pick out what you want, and we ship to you or your recipient. We will even gift wrap and include a gift note!

We are small, but we are mighty! If I had a book for every time a customer praises our book collection, we'd be as big as a Barnes & Noble store! Words Matter's Book, Mind and Thinker corner (which has tentacled all over the shop!) features our favorite all-time inspiring books for all ages, some in keepsake editions, like the illustrated slipcover edition of Paulo Coelho's The Alchemist, and the 75th Anniversary edition of The Little Prince with the story of its making and some of the original sketches for the book. And then there's Douglas Woods' award-winning Old Turtle, several editions of Alice in Wonderland and The Velveteen Rabbit; The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse; Big Panda and Tiny Dragon, Winnie-the-Pooh, and so on. Some of our favorites are wonderful books about the natural world, such as The Hidden Life of Trees, 80 Trees Around the World, Finding the Mother Tree, The Nature of Oaks, Amazing Earth, and more.
We also carry timely and timeless works that offer heartfelt and intelligent wisdom by some of our favorite visionaries, such as Parker J. Palmer's Healing the Heart of Democracy, Valarie Kaur's See No Stranger, Stephen Cope's The Great Work of Your Life, Brene Brown's Atlas of the Heart, Padraig O. Tuama's In the Shelter, Mark Nepo's More Together Than Alone and other titles, Anam Cara and other works by John O'Donohue, Richard Rohr, John Muir, and special editions of Walt Whitman, Mark Twain, Henry Thoreau--and wonderfully more! 
We also carry the works of local authors, including my own books, along with DVD docudramas by Emmy award-winning filmmakers Thomas and Pamela Wagner, who are transplants to Staunton from New York.

Poetry Collections
Amanda Gorman's riveting performance of her poem The Hill We Climb at the 2021 Presidential Inauguration put poetry on America's map for many people who had never even read a poem, and we must've sold over 200 of that book since then, plus her subsequent book, Call Us What We Carry. Other favorites we keep in stock are the works of Mary Oliver (of course), Rupi Kaur, Wendell Berry, Rumi, Hafiz, Kahlil Gibran, Walt Whitman, and many more. 
Artisan Jewelry
We feature some jewelry artisans who are customer favorites, such as Stacie Florer, who works with silver, copper and brass, from Roanoke, VA, and Marcy Rowland, an Appalachian artisan who creates facsimiles of duck feathers from her carved and painted wood shapes. We also have crystal and Tarot pendants with assorted chains.
