The Roles of the 72 Angels in Human Life

For centuries we have thought of Angels as emissaries of the Divine that come “down” to us or watch over us from “above.” However, the Angelic Kabbalah introduces us to the 72 Angels and Tree of Life mysteries in a much more intimate light. As specific energetic qualities of the Divine Being that reveal the inherent diversity of Its nature, the 72 Angels are said to dwell within and among us to illuminate and amplify the vast spectrum of Divine essence, possibilities and purposes within our humanity. Furthermore, our personal Birth Angels, which correspond to our date and time of birth, especially signify and support what we each are here to do, heal, express and manifest in our current lifetime.

As angles and amplifiers of light-consciousness and the awareness that we are not “only human,” but Divine-Human beings. The 72 Angels show us that God is everywhere, in the inside and outside of everything and everyone as not only the animating Spirit of physical matter – but also physical matter itself as denser vibrations of Divine Light. Thus, God, and all that is Divine, is not separate and apart from us, but rather here within, and as, each of us as a differentiated soul-spark of Itself that gives meaning, purpose and spiritual essence to our human form. The Angels, as angles of Divine Light, magnify within us those particular qualities of the Divine which they embody and which our soul desires to emphasize in our current lifetime.
As illuminators of the Love and Truth which compose and expand our Divine-Human nature and tell the whole story of who we are. The 72 Angels amplify the particular aspects of Truth (the Divine I AM) which we each carry in our soul, and which are ultimately transmitted into our heart as our ever-evolving personal truths and human identity (I Am that which…). It is in our heart where the truth of who we are might be discovered, explored, expressed and expanded through love, intuition, wisdom and the eternal resources available to our heart from our soul-consciousness. This is why there is so much energy and momentum around our earthly endeavors and creations that are propelled by “doing what we love and loving what we do.” And also why, through love, we are continually urged from within to be and express more of who we are and desire to become as a particular Divine-Human “I Am that which….”
As “heart-bridge” builders within us and two-way messengers between our Divine and human aspects and the greater totality of Spirit. The 72 Angels work within our hearts to help us connect the Divine qualities and purposes of our soul with our mind/body preoccupations, actions and endeavors. Simply put, the Angels help the soul talk to the heart, and the heart to talk to mind and body. In addition, because of the heart’s capacity for love, compassion, intuition and wisdom-making, anything we bring back into our heart from our outer experiences and accumulation of information and knowledge can be mined by our soul for the meaning and purpose that feed and expand it.
Here at the sacred altar of our heart is where the 72 Angelic aspects of our inner Divine continually meet the particular needs, longings, hurts, challenges, potentials and purposes of our time on Earth. Ultimately, we come to understand that our heart is both a receiver for our soul and a transmitter of its “earthly agenda” throughout our entire being and doing. When heart and soul are communicating and exchanging information, the heart becomes our lifeline to Spirit, the inner crucible by which our human aspects and experiences are continually transformed and ennobled, the means by which we may be born anew again and again. And of crucial importance to our personal well-being and that of the whole planet, the heart is our unity-connection to our fellow beings and all of Creation. Thus the heart is, as Siddha Yoga guru Nityananda said, "the hub of all sacred places," a "fulcrum of the cosmos" (Upanishads), a two-way bridge that connects "a causal link" (Aryeh Kaplan, Sefir Yetzirah) between and among Spirit-soul-self-others.
In prayer, meditation and communication with the Divine, we are doing two marvelous things – (1) quickening our awareness that we have the rarer ethers of the Divine “on tap” within our own heart and soul for communion and help with our human-life conditions and circumstances, and that (2) by plugging into our own inner Divine, we gain access to the totality of the Divine in the collective consciousness of all Creation and the cosmos – and the compounded spiritual magic that can accumulate “when two or more are gathered!” This is why prayer-chains and group meditations and healings are so powerful.

As transmuters of our “shadow” energies and transformers of our base mettle into “Divine-Human gold.” The 72 Angelic Energies help to expand the commingled light of love and truth within us. With this light comes healing of the accumulated karma of harbored hurts and transgressions against self and others, so that we may be free to express the dharma of our soul purposes in service to ourselves, each other and the Divine Itself within, and as, us. As the Wisdoms suggest, we are not meant to do battle with our inner shadows, but to “bring them to light” so that they may show us where healing is needed. The 72 Angels are said to be especially equipped for this because they each have their own “shadow counterpart,” represented by the “Inversions” of their “Virtues” and the number 144 which is also associated with them. Although the duality of the world brings us both the light and the dark, when we are willing to confront the shadows within us, the shadows in the outer world can ultimately have no dominion over us. The Wisdom of MANAKEL would seem to concur:

As the two-sided light of MANAKEL, I tell you that your true initiation and power as a Divine-Human being is to realize both the light and the shadow within you and to partake of their contrasting powers to continually move you from fragmentation toward wholeness. Allow the gifts of the dark to show you where healing is needed. Learn from the shadows the range and empowering contrasts within your humanity. Let your darker beauties give depth and texture to your lightness of being. Do not fear the dark or judge yourself because of it, for it comes to teach you how to love and forgive. Use the dark to recognize and bring forth the light, and the dark will be fulfilled in its purpose through you and in the world. …Finally, offer your willingness to love everything that comes from within you and around you, and nothing but love will have a hold on you or hold back the truth of you.

In the Angelic mysteries, the more love-and-truth light we allow to expand within us, the less room there is for hurt, doubt, worry, shame, guilt or any thought or feeling which causes us to diminish rather than expand. Ultimately, as heart-and-soul awareness saturates our being with Divine consciousness, our human aspects are ennobled and the vibrations of our entire being are heightened. This is ascension in the body – the divinization of our humanity and the means by which we may fulfill the desire of the Divine within us to bring the heavens to Earth and experience life as only each of us can live it.
As expressions of the inherently diverse nature of the Divine Oneness. The 72 Angels illuminate and help us to embrace the diversity of qualities which compose our own Divine-Human nature and all the diverse expressions of Creation. As the Wisdoms share with us, if we are ever going to create peace on Earth, we must come to understand that “it takes the totality of humankind and the beings and things of the natural world and beyond to reveal and express the diverse nature of God.” This suggests the importance of not just tolerating or even accepting each other’s diversities. It means embracing ourselves and all beings, ways and things as valuable and illuminating pieces of the bigger picture puzzle of the Divine which is embodied by all the cosmos, creation and life itself. Truly, if God is all there is, then we are each here to literally “flesh out” our part of the picture with the fullness of our unique being – for ourselves, each other and the fulfillment of the Divine on Earth.
