Artist Statement…This work represents a lot of soul-searching through the years to understand both in the story of Christ and in our own human lives how the sacrifices we make and sometimes suffer can become ultimately our fulfillments. In contemplating imagery to capture this, it came to me to depict a white dove taking flight from the center of the cross, to honor both the sacrifice of the cross and its fulfillment through the Holy Spirit. I constructed the image of the cross from a picture of a beloved old wooden table where I do a lot of writing and other creating, and which has a bird carving that bridges a crack in the table. The forsythia were the first blooms to greet me in a new North Carolina mountain home, and the jonquils are some of the first early Spring blooms.
