(Excerpt of lyrics by Terry Cox, music by Art Labriola)
Artist statement...This song arose while ruminating about how hard it is to be human, and yet there are always those among us who carry a heavier cross. Perhaps the story of Christ's crucifixion is meant to help us bear our crosses in life not so much with a sense of suffering, but with trust in a love that will bring goodness from all things, no matter how difficult they may be for us. The image here is a tree cultivated to grow almost flat against a stone wall in the grand gardens of the Biltmore House in Asheville, NC. I was struck by the seeming collaboration of the tree and the wall -- the wall providing both landscape and support, the tree giving life to the stone. And the beautiful symmetry of the branches seemed like so many living crosses superimposed upon the one.
