"THE STORY OF LOVE & TRUTH"SPEAKING PROGRAM: High school and college orientation, graduation or departmental program; think-tank or social action group/association; other public and private venues. FORMAT: 35-minute reading of book followed by a discussion tailored to the venue. In the beginning, Love and Truth were two halves of a seemingly perfect pair. Together with their different forms, yet sameness of heart, they were able to know and do all things in service to whomever they encountered. "It seemed they would spend all eternity opening what was closed, filling what was empty, healing what was broken and making crooked things straight." Then one day Truth got an independent notion to "see the world from its own single two eyes for once!" Without Love to slow it down or answer to, Truth made auspicious headway in the world. From podiums to pulpits and grandstands, Truth became ever more powerful, eloquent and far-reaching. Soon, beings all over the world began to steal pieces of Truth and then go around claiming to own the only Truth. Then one day while leading a great battle between two opposing Truth-defenders, Truth was felled from its very high horse. As it lay in the mud broken and forgotten, only one thing would be able to save it..... PROGRAM SUMMARY: As in the ancient art of storytelling, a reading of THE STORY OF LOVE & TRUTH will be used as a catalyst to open and expand "inner space" among the listeners and stimulate discussion of "Big Ideas." The paradoxical pull in this story is as old as life itself and as timely as the disparity in our present-day world between what we say we value -- and what we actually implement in our personal lives and our societal systems, organizations and governments. It is also a story about what often happens to the world when Truth goes journeying without Love…about our hidden longing for the very things, sometimes the noblest parts of ourselves, which we have often willingly left behind…a tribute to the transformative power of compassion and the uncommon possibilities of "where two or more are gathered." It is also an inspiring forecast of all we might yet become as we begin to heal the disconnect between who we are and who we really want to be and how we choose to live and work in the world. For a high school or college program, students will be invited to comment on the elements of LOVE & TRUTH that resonate with them and why. They will also be invited to connect the “Big Ideas” of the story with Big Ideas in their own lives and in the world at large: 1- In the world today where might you see similarities to some of the events in THE STORY OF LOVE & TRUTH? 2- How do Love and Truth show up in your life – personally in your own dreams and sense of purpose, as well as in relationship or collaboration with others? If what you love to do is connected to your true purpose in the world, how could you help to change the world? 3- How can you use education to expand and focus your own talents, dreams and goals? For a public discussion/social action group/association/think-tank, these points might be considered: 1- In the world today where might you see similarities to some of the events in THE STORY OF LOVE & TRUTH? 2- If we were to begin to true-up some of our organizations and systems -- even at local community levels -- so that they reflect the higher values of our humanity, beyond service, to truly care about each other as our extended global family, where might we start? Give some examples of what that would look like. 3- If you were to “true-up” your own individual and family life so that your sense of purpose, relationships and work are more aligned with the things you value most, what would that mean -- what kind of life would you be living? How would you weigh what you might lose against what you might gain? |
