"THE MAGIC & MECHANICS OF LYRIC WRITING" WORKSHOP A For Artists & Musicians ~ 1-Day Crash Course This workshop is geared to singers, musicians & recording artists who want to be able to write or fine-tune their own lyrics and/or collaborate with other songwriters. All aspects of lyric writing are covered, including song structure and the “Rule of 2,” common verse and chorus constructions, hooks and title placements, imagery and metaphor, the “marriage” of music and lyrics, and the “3 R’s” of lyric writing – Rhythm, Rhyme & Repetition. Participants are asked to bring 1-2 songs/lyrics or ideas for review. WORKSHOP B For Beginning Lyric/Songwriters ~ 1-Day Crash Course To be a lyric writer, as with any other kind of creativity, you need primarily four things: love of your art -- the willingness to listen (to both visible and invisible muses) -- a working knowledge of craft to help give form to the gifts of inspiration – and an urge to communicate. Whoever you are -- a beginning songwriter or musician, a poet or journal writer looking for musical wings to fly your words off that flat page, or a 9 to 5’er broadening your horizons -- I will show you in one day what it took me two years to grasp at the beginning of my own music career. The basic elements of lyric writing will be covered, including song structure and the “Rule of 2,” common verse and chorus constructions, hooks and title placements, imagery and metaphor, the “marriage” of music and lyrics, and the “3 R’s” of lyric writing – Rhythm, Rhyme & Repetition. Participants are asked to bring 1-2 songs, lyrics, poems or lyric ideas for review. SCHOOL PROGRAM For Music & English Departments ~ 1-hour to Half-Day Program This program is geared to students in Music/Band or English departments. Creative writing students are shown the difference between a poem and lyrics for a song. As an interactive exercise, students are asked to bring an existing poem to turn into a lyric. For music students and instrumentalists, we will discuss song structure and elements involved in the "marriage" of music and lyrics, as well as collaboration. Time permitting, students will pair up for an exercise of writing lyrics to an existing piece of music. |
